I strive to provide a safe and supportive space for everyone, that helps to lead to social-emotional growth and a successful future. My long-term goal is to advocate for comprehensive mental health services within all educational institutions. I believe that by addressing children's needs in a single setting, we can improve access to care, early identification and interventions, and ultimately more positive outcomes. I am committed to deepening my understanding of counseling principles and practices, and to contributing meaningfully to the field of mental health through continuous learning and growth.
My personal journey has deeply influenced my professional path. Growing up in Jamaica with a sibling with special needs, I was often frustrated to see how difficult it was to obtain the appropriate services to meet her needs. At that time, there were no suitable places designated for students with disabilities to receive appropriate educational services after graduating from elementary school. Witnessing my mother's tireless advocacy for her and eventually finding an appropriate place that treated her and other students with disabilities in a kind and compassionate way inspired me to work in this field.
After migrating to America and observing how much more accessible services were for students with disabilities, I decided to pursue a career in psychology. After my discharge from active-duty service in the US Army, I went back to school and obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology. I went on to receive a Master's Degree in School Psychology and am currently pursuing an Advanced Certificate in Licensed Mental Health Counseling.
For the past 18 years, I have worked as a School Psychologist, supporting students and families in the New York City Public Schools. I have also witnessed the need for mental health services outside of the school setting to address growing and varied mental health needs that our students are faced with on a daily basis. Working closely with students, families, and educators has provided me with valuable insight into the complex emotional and psychological needs present in diverse school settings. I have also developed skills in assessment, intervention, and collaboration, as well as strong abilities in analytical thinking and mentoring.
